Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport is a medium-sized commercial airport, ranked 24th in the United States based on passenger volume. Occupying approximately 3,600 acres in northern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the facility is owned by the Maryland Department of Transportation and operated by the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA). Air carriers using the facility include 52 commercial, commuter, charter, and cargo airlines engaged in an average of 850 flight operations daily. An average exceeding 57,000 passengers per day are served by a single terminal building with 1 international and 4 domestic concourses, comprising approximately 2,000,000 square ft. Inter-modal transportation services at the site include multiple parking facilities with associated shuttle buses, an AMTRAK station, and Light-Rail stops. MAA, tenant, and contractor employees working at BWI exceed 10,000.

EA has provided multimedia environmental compliance and Environmental Management System implementation support to the MAA at BWI Marshall and Martin State airports. Total contract value exceeds $7 million; to date, 41 tasks orders have been awarded. Under this contract, EA has been the primary consultant for development and implementation of the MAA’s Environmental Management System and various compliance programs for the past 5 years. We have been directly involved in nearly all activities and initiatives related to ongoing regulatory compliance, sustainability, auditing, and environmental management at both airports during this period. Specific services to date have included:

  • Phase I/II environmental site assessments
  • Asbestos abatement support, Industrial hygiene/indoor air quality services, and asbestos management plan development
