REMEDIAL ACTION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE,

EA transitioned the operation and maintenance of a treatment system from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with no difficulty meeting the Agency’s operational requirements. EA installed and started up upgrades to the treatment system (air stripper, ion exchange, control, and data logging systems). Optimization efforts included:

  • Increased the overall operating efficiency (run time) of the groundwater treatment system (currently approximately 100%) and improved the number of operating hours per month—far exceeding the regulatory requirement (90%)—while reducing overall costs by approximately 20%.
  • Constructed an infiltration gallery for treated groundwater discharge that is saving $3.5M over the life of the remediation. EA received the 2007 Silver Award for Excellence, ACEC State of Washington Chapter, for the design/build infiltration gallery project.
  • Revised groundwater monitoring plan to reduce frequency and number of wells sampled (saving $40,000 annually). Eliminated quarterly sampling (saving $50,000 annually).
  • Reduced electrical costs by 35% (saving $800 per month) through system optimization.

EA also designed and constructed an in-well stripping/soil vapor extraction system, including installation of 9 in-well stripping wells, 5 soil vapor extraction wells, 11 monitoring wells, and associated piping—without affecting 24/7 plant operations during construction. The system reduced volatile organic compound concentrations in the source area by 90% in 18 months, and is currently reducing the footprint of the treatment plume.
