ONSITE INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE
SERVICES

Defense Distribution Center
San Joaquin, California

EA provides full-time, onsite industrial hygiene and ergonomic and training services for approximately 1,600 employees at the Defense Distribution Center, San Joaquin, California (DDJC). Services included recognition and evaluation of potential health hazards in the work environment and implementation of necessary controls, procedures, or work practice changes to eliminate or reduce the hazards. EA administrates a site-wide respiratory protection program, including annual training and fit testing for approximately 200 DDJC personnel and the permit required confined space entry program. These activities include review of confined space permits, review of all standard operating procedures, and annual inspections of all permit required confined spaces.

EA conducts periodic noise assessments and provides ergonomic training to DDJC staff to promote ergonomically correct procedures for performing work in warehouse and office environments. EA (coordinating with DDJC Safety Office) has developed a Back Injury Prevention and Ergonomics Course. The 4-hour course targets all 1,600 DDJC personnel, and includes an initial classroom presentation followed by a hands-on training presentation for the Organization’s specific processes.

EA assists DDJC in completing certification for the Voluntary Protection Program to promote effective worksite-based safety and health. In the Voluntary Protection Program, management, labor, and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. Approval into the Voluntary Protection Program is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health. Since beginning the Voluntary Protection Program certification process, safety at DDJC has improved and injuries and lost-time accidents have decreased significantly. In addition to safer worker conditions, fewer injuries and illnesses mean lower costs in terms of workers compensation premiums and medical costs.
