DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WATERSHED RESTORATION PROJECTS, MANELL-GEUS WATERSHEDS

The primary objective of this project is to provide services to assess the Manell-Geus watersheds to design and implement projects to stabilize stream bank and create riparian buffers in the Manell-Geus watersheds in southern Guam.
A site assessment and survey of the streams and riparian zones of the Manell-Geus watersheds were conducted by EA personnel. During the field survey activities, areas indicating significant erosion were identified and prioritized.
The design of two types of erosion controls projects to reduce sediment loads in the Manell-Geus watersheds is as follows:
- Stream bank stabilization using vegetative material to include native plants and grasses
- Riparian buffer strips using vegetative methods and/or natural fibers and/or other appropriate methods.
Implementation of best management practices within each area will help to reduce stream water velocity and the amount of sediment entering the adjacent coastal waters. The goal is to test low cost, low maintenance options that can be implemented within similar watershed conditions in southern Guam.
The project is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Coral Reef Conservation Program. This contract is the result of a competitive selection process following a request for proposals issued by NOAA in 2012.
